Winter Solstice Pet Remembrance

The longest night of the year is dark, it’s cold, and for those of us grieving a beloved family member it can also feel very lonely. But the solstice also gives us an opportunity for remembrance and reflection in the midst of the busy holiday season.

Make time today to dig out those old photographs, to run your fingers over their engraved nametag, and hold tight to their favorite toy.

And what better time to light a candle and enjoy the warm glow or step outside to marvel at the stars in the vastness of the night sky?

Thinking and talking about those we’ve loved and lost is the best way to keep their memory alive. Write down your thoughts, or sketch some shapes that come to mind. Seek out some poetry related to animals, grief, or the solstice and reflect on the passages and what they bring to mind.

Give your current pets some extra attention. They might be feeling the lower energy of this time of year too, and nothing makes them happier than spending time with you.

Maybe you have a friend who’s hurting and a text or phone call from you would absolutely make their day.

Maybe stepping away from holiday traditions or people that don’t bring you joy is the respite you need to recharge and do some self-care.

If your veterinary clinic hosts a solstice remembrance event, being with others who are going through the same things you are can be incredibly healing. You can view this virtual solstice event from during the pandemic, created by Lake Harriet Veterinary. The audio starts at 3:07, and the 14:00 mark brings a beautiful reading if you’d like to skip around.

Whatever you choose to do this time of year, find comfort in knowing that your pet was truly loved, and that your own life has been made so much richer for having shared it with them.

Sending you peace and love for the coming year,
Sarah Ernhart, Pet Memorial Photographers
